periodontics treats conditions that affect the tissues “around your teeth,” such as bone loss, gum recession and periodontal (gum) disease. For the treatment of gums, both surgical and non-surgical methods like scaling and root planning are used. These treatments are recommended to remove the plaque that builds up on the teeth. If it is left untreated, the bone and surrounding tissues decay, resulting in loose teeth, or worse, tooth loss. Gum diseases occur due to the infection caused by the accumulation of bacterial beneath the gum line.
